Tatge farm, c. 1915

1 of 3

There is an old saying that "women's work is never done," because on many farms everything was women's work. Not only did they tend to the poultry and the usual chores like laundry and canning, they raised the children, tended gardens and worked in the fields.

Chickens provided another source of meat. Extra eggs were sold for income. Photo courtesy of Florence Dieckoff.

*Please note, the photographs in this section are not from Mathilda Heine's collection, but were taken on a nearby farm by various photographers.
