mother with her geese, c. 1915

4 of 18

Tillie's mother, Mary, raised large flocks of geese. Sometimes she tended as many as eighty at a time and every part of each bird served a purpose. Goose feathers stuffed into squares of striped cloth gave the family plump, soft pillows. The wing tips were fashioned into brooms. Roast goose was a family favorite and graced the table on special occasions such as Christmas dinner. Any extra birds were sold for meat for about 25 cents a pound in 1920.
