Hoosier Grove Museum

While reading, writing and arithmetic made up the core studies in the one-room school, other subjects such as art or drawing rounded out the daily schedule. Skills such as shading, perspective and "blocking in" were the focus of the lessons. Drawing was also seen as an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of nature and observation skills.

Here are four drawing lessons with a nature theme, one for each season of the year. They are reprinted from two early 20th century drawing textbooks found in the Hoosier Grove Museum's collection. You can copy them or find other things to study and draw from your own surroundings.

For two of the lessons all you need are a pencil and paper. The others are brush drawings. For these you will need India Ink and a brush made to use with it. The ink and brushes are available at any craft or art supply store.

Materials Needed:

Pencil
Paper
Brush
and India Ink (found at any craft store)
