This confirmation certificate is from the collection of the Hoosier Grove Museum. The German-language church, Deutsche Vereinigte, Evangelische Luterische Immanuel's Gemeinde, issued it to Johann Schunemann in 1867. Commonly known as Hoosier Grove Church, it was organized by thirteen farmers in 1852. The church continues to this day as Immanuel United Church of Christ. Dedicated in 1868, the building stands at the northwest corner of what are now Barrington and Old Church Roads in Streamwood, Illinois.

Confirmation marked the passage from childhood to adult membership in the church and the community. Photo courtesy of the Hecht family.
