What's in Elsie's Lunch Pail features a recipe from a former student at Hoosier Grove School, for her favorite sugar cookies. Food reflects family and community culture. Use the exercise below to encourage students to begin to think about their own traditions.

Create a Classroom Cookbook

Ask each student to bring a recipe to school that is a family favorite. These can be handwritten or printed on the computer if available. Direct each student to write about the recipe and why it is a favorite answering such questions as:

  • Is this food made for everyday or is it a dish that is served on special occasions?
  • Where did the recipe come from?
  • Does the recipe reflect the student's ethnic or cultural heritage?
  • Did the recipe get handed down from a grandparent, aunt or uncle?
  • Was it found in a cookbook or Internet site?

Ask the students to create illustrations related to the recipes. Put the illustrations and recipes in a notebook and keep it in the classroom. Make copies to share with each student's family.
